November 2007

Dear Parents/Guardians

Students in Year 11 are now approaching their 'Mock' GCSE examinations which are seen by the school as a vital part of the preparation towards successful outcomes next summer.

The main examination period will be the week beginning 3rd December (see timetable).  Modern Foreign Language orals will take place during the following week. Subjects where modular examinations take place throughout the course such as Science and Mathematics have chosen not to assess at this time. Practical subjects such as Art and Drama will assess in their department areas and will give information directly to students.

Preparation for these examinations is essential in order for both students and staff to gauge how progress is being made and to this end can I ask for support from you in being aware of how your son/daughter is preparing.

From these examinations we will be asking staff to give an adjusted 'Predicted Grade' to the one published in Year 10 which is the likely outcome if the students continue to progress at the level that they are doing at present.  In addition staff will give a 'Potential Grade' which is what the students could gain if they really worked hard.  If these grades are identical then clearly the students are working to the best of their ability whereas a discrepancy might suggest that there is more effort to give. Lessons will continue throughout this period when examinations are not being sat.

If you have any questions regarding these examinations could you please contact the relevant subject teacher or your child's tutor.

Yours sincerely,

G J Beynon
Assistant Headteacher (Data and Assessment)
